Tynemouth, Cullercoats and Whitley Bay have some of the best housing stock in the region for a stove. Large Victorian and Edwardian rooms, generous chimney breasts and original features worth building around. The catch is exposure. A stack sitting a few hundred yards from the North Sea gets weather that an inland one never sees.
That is why so many of the calls we get along this coast are about downdraft and smoke coming back into the room. Nine times out of ten it is not the appliance. It is an unlined or oversized flue, or the wrong cowl on top of an exposed stack, and both are fixable.
Inland at Wallsend and Longbenton the stock is more mixed, with plenty of postwar semis where the stack has been removed or was never there. Those are twin wall jobs, routed to suit the house.

Almost always downdraft on an exposed coastal stack, made worse by an unlined or oversized flue. The usual fix is a liner to give the appliance the correct diameter, plus an anti-downdraft cowl on top. We survey it before recommending either.
Usually yes, and it is often worth it. We open the chamber up to a suitable size behind the original surround where the feature is worth keeping, and design the installation around it rather than ripping it out.
It affects anything above the roofline. On coastal jobs we pay particular attention to the cowl, the flashing and the terminal, because those are the parts taking the weather. It is one of the reasons a system specified for an inland property does not simply carry over.
A twin wall insulated flue. A lot of the postwar stock around Wallsend and Longbenton either never had a stack or had it removed, and twin wall builds a flue where there was not one, routed internally or up an external wall.
