Every stove we supply meets it. Worth understanding why it matters, because it is the one specification that decides whether you can legally use a stove where you live.
Since January 2022 every new stove sold in the UK has had to meet Ecodesign standards, which cap the particulates and gases an appliance can put out and set a minimum efficiency. In practice it means a modern stove burns cleaner and gets more heat out of the same log than one fitted fifteen years ago.
The part that catches people out is smoke control areas. Much of Tyne and Wear is covered by one, and in a smoke control area you can only burn authorised fuel, or use an appliance that has been exempted by DEFRA.
Every stove on this page is suitable for use in a smoke control area, so it is not something you need to worry about with us.
If you already have an older stove, you are not obliged to replace it. But an Ecodesign appliance on a properly lined flue will use noticeably less fuel, which is usually the reason people change rather than the regulations.

People spend weeks choosing a stove and never ask about the liner. Yet most problems we are called out to are flue problems. A liner that is the wrong grade or poorly made can corrode, and a cheap cowl can let in rain or birds. Choosing reputable stove and flue brands together is what makes an installation last.
Most manufacturers expect their appliance to be installed by a competent, registered installer, following their installation manual, for the warranty to apply.
Because we are HETAS registered and install every stove to the manufacturer's instructions, the warranty is protected. Keep your HETAS certificate and the manual together, because a warranty claim will usually ask for both. You can check our registration on the HETAS register.
Four specific stoves are included in our fixed price stove packages, all Ecodesign Ready and suitable for smoke control areas. If none suit, we will price a different appliance from the stove and flue brands we fit, around the same installation.
What wears out, why parts availability decides which stove and flue brands we fit, and how to keep a stove running well.
Every stove has consumable parts. Door rope flattens and stops sealing, glass can crack if a log is jammed against it, firebricks or vermiculite boards crack with use, and baffles and grates wear over the years. None of it is a fault, and all of it is replaceable.
A stove can last twenty years or more if it is looked after. The question is whether you can still get a door glass for it in year twelve. That is the main reason we stick to established stove and flue brands rather than whatever is cheapest online. Saving a hundred pounds on an obscure stove can cost far more later.
When a part is no longer made, the only fix can be a whole new appliance, and possibly a new liner if the replacement needs a different diameter. That is an expensive way to save money at the start, and it is easily avoidable with the right choice of make on day one.
The model name and serial number are usually on a plate on the back or side of the stove, and on the paperwork we leave with you. With that, we can tell you exactly which part you need. Buying genuine parts from the manufacturer's range keeps the stove performing as it was designed to.
Whichever of the stove and flue brands you choose, the flue needs sweeping at least once a year, and more often for wood in regular use. The National Association of Chimney Sweeps lists qualified sweeps across the region.
A few quick pointers on which kind of stove suits which room.
A compact stove of around three to five kilowatts suits most living rooms. Several of the stove and flue brands we fit make small, efficient models that heat a modest room without overheating it.
A larger room needs more output, and above five kilowatts a permanent air vent is required. A freestanding stove, which radiates heat from every side, often suits an open plan space best.
Much of Tyne and Wear is a smoke control area. Every stove from the stove and flue brands we supply is suitable, so it is not something you need to research yourself. The GOV.UK smoke control rules explain what you can burn.
Most of the stove and flue brands we fit offer both. A multi-fuel stove gives the option of smokeless fuel for a longer burn, while a wood burning stove is the simpler choice if you have a good log supply.

There is no single answer, which is why we work with several. For most rooms the difference between brands at the same output is smaller than the difference between a well sized stove and an oversized one. Get the output and the flue right and any of these will do a good job.
Usually, provided it is a current appliance with the paperwork and it suits the property. We will look at it as part of the free survey. Be aware that a stove bought online is not always the one the room needs, and we will say so if it is not.
Often yes. These are the ones we supply day to day and can get parts for quickly, but if you have your heart set on something else, ask. The fixed price packages are built around four specific models, so a different appliance would be quoted separately.
Rope, glass and baffles are consumables and every stove needs them eventually. It is one of the reasons we stick to established brands, because parts are still available in ten years. Worth thinking about before buying something obscure to save a hundred pounds.
